He checked his image once more in the visor mirror of his BMW before stepping out into the crisp autumn air. The sun shone brightly but it did not impart much warmth to this section of the city. His left arm was raised and his expensive watch glistened in the light as he checked the time; still two minutes early. A sparkling, glass skyscraper towered above him but he did not look up--he seemed too preoccupied. Two sets of automatic doors whirred softly aside for this important looking man. Marble and polished chrome gleamed on either side. Everything was in perfect symmetry; potted plants, modern leather sofas, and artwork on the walls. He ascended the escalator as he gazed about. A secretary clothed in a black dress waited behind a rich mahogany desk with a fresh arrangement of exotic flowers on it when he arrived on the second floor.
"Good morning-" she said.
"Good morning," he said "I have an appointment with Mr. Gorelia, if you please."
"Why sure," she said while scrolling through some sort of list on her Macintosh, "Mr. Harms?"
"Yes, that's me.."
"Okay it should be just a few minutes. Have seat over there." she said waving her hand in the direction of a lavish chair beside a perfect Japanese bonsai tree.
He sat.
Three minutes later the famous Mr. Gorelia summoned the visitor to his spacious outer office. Mr. Harms tried to cover his nervousness as he entered.
"There is no need to sit down," began Mr. Gorelia "What I have to say will not take long. You are not suitable for the job I had in mind. You are dismissed."
Mr. Harms turned and walked back down the hallway. It felt like his head was exploding. How could this be happening to him? He didn't deserve it. He tried in vain to act professional as he passed the secretary's desk.
"Have a good afternoon." he heard her say as he dashed down the escalator. He took no notice of the automatic doors as they swished aside. His mind was in turmoil. His day was spoiled. How long would it take to start all over? Where would he start?
Questions.
..

ReplyDeleteThanks. I know I feel sorrow for Mr. Harms as well but I think he needed a lesson about pride- (maybe)
