side dish of raindrops

He left his dull apartment and walked down the sidewalk. The young man took even steps made sure that he did not step on the cracks. His mind was full of swirling ideas and notions.
The day was slightly warm at twenty two degrees celsius and the sky was partially cloudy with a rare, silver raindrop that made a splash where it landed. Trees were just beginning to burst forth with fresh leaves and/or delicate blossoms with fresh scents. The birds were twittering happily; glad that spring had finally arrived.
An older woman sat knitting by a window on the third floor of an apartment across the avenue. She was looking about at all of the things I described earlier. She too, was happy for this season.
Then as she sat by the window thinking of the days gone by, she noticed the young man. He was clad in a thin, gray jacket, faded blue-jeans, and dirty white sneakers. A sad and discouraged look covered his face. The woman wondered how anyone could look so sad on a glorious day like today.
You might be wondering the same thing.
This morning the young man had taken a taxi to the factory where he worked. As he stepped into the work room, his boss greeted him with a smile and told him that the company had recently purchased a marvelous new machine! And this machine was so wonderful that he would needto lay off some of his employees! He then proceeded to tell the young man to leave because there was no work for him here. Heleft with a sad face.
To make matters worse, as he stepped onto the crosswalk at a busy intersection, a speeding motorist in a nineteen seventy two Buick gave him a push. He flopped onto the hood and felt like giving up. But instead of giving in to defeat, he vowed to wear his bicycle helmet next time he went walking. The pediatrician supported this idea. (as did the man's mother-in-law)
